The huge, 2,335-lot auction also featured items pertaining to other notorious Wild West outlaws like Black Bart, the Dalton Gang and John Wesley Hardin.

A staggering 2,335 lots came up for bid across the four days, in many collecting categories. The Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid posters sold as one lot and represented one of the top lots overall. The two outlaws were famously depicted in a movie starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. They died in a hail of gunfire at the end. In real life, they met a similar fate, in Bolivia.

That lot, and others like it, were featured on Day 3, unquestionably the busiest of the three days. Other top achievers from the session that also featured famous outlaws included the following:

• An 1882 wanted poster for Black Bart Poet Stage Robber, offering an $800 reward, along with a circular compiled by J.B. Hume, a Wells Fargo Special Officer, containing a poem written by Bart found after a robbery. Bart’s real name was Charles E. Boles ($7,187).
• A rare original carte de visite photograph of Black Bart, circulated by Wells Fargo out of Sacramento, Calif. The lot also featured a photograph of Bart, signed (as “Charles E. Boles”), from when he served as a U.S. Army First Sergeant in Illinois ($3,875). • A collection of nine items relating to the notorious Dalton Gang, including a carte de visite of the deceased gang, taken by a Kansas photographer after a botched bank robbery attempt; and Gratton Dalton’s signed oath of office to become a U.S. Marshal ($5,000). • A Wells Fargo $1,800 reward poster issued in 1881 for three masked men still at large after the Nov. 7, 1881 robbery of the stage from Sonora to Milton, California. The men included Billy Minor (or Miner, alias Billy Anderson, alias the “Grey Fox”) ($4,875). • A collection of four items from the life of John Wesley Hardin (1853-1895), a hardened criminal, Western outlaw and murderer of at least a dozen men, who became a lawyer at the end of his life, only to have himself murdered in El Paso by a jealous man ($3,375).

Also sold were two Wells Fargo reward posters from 1875: one issued in San Francisco by Gen. Superintendent John J. Valentine, offering a $3,000 reward for the recovery of gold bars and dust stolen from the Express Box from Sonora and Columbia to Milton ($2,500); and one, also from Valentine, offering a reward for the capture of an unknown bandit who stole a Wells Fargo & Co.’s express box on the Chinese and Copperopolis stage of $600 in coin and gold dust ($4,375).

Following are additional highlights from the auction. Internet bidding was via iCollector.com, LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. All prices include an 18 percent buyer’s premium.

Day 1, on Thursday, June 6th, featured 590 lots of Native Americana, jewelry and watches, collectibles, books / antiquarian, medical collectibles, advertising items, toys and kids’ items.

A copy of Pentateuch /Salonica 1521, very old and with handwriting on two sides, realized $8,750. It traces the history of the Jews of Thessaloniki (also known as Salonika) dating back 2,000 years. In Greek, the Pentateuch (which Jews call the Torah) includes the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, containing some of the most famous stories in the Bible, including Adam and Eve, Jacob and his brothers, Moses and the Ten Commandments.

Day 2, on Friday, June 7th, contained 550 lots of maps, transportation and railroad (including two key railroad pass collections), plus old stock certificates (including banking, railroad and other).

A railroad pass (#131) for the Bodie and Benton and Commercial Co. from 1887, issued to W. H. Jones, Arizona & New Mexico Railroad, signed by Thomas Falk, Gen. Supt., brought $6,562.

As stated, Day 3, on Saturday, June 8th, was super busy, with 595 lots of Wells Fargo & Express, outlaws and lawmen, autographs, Rev War and early military, President Lincoln, the JFK assassination, Black Americana, Civil War, Gen. George A. Custer, presidential, firearms and weaponry, sports / Hall of Fame, baseball, basketball, boxing, football and many other items.

Black Americana featured an original ferrotype photograph of eight of the founding members of the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee and the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society (better known collectively as the Underground Railroad, which shuttled slaves from the South to the North in the 1800s). The photograph was taken circa 1855-1860, with identifying notes included ($6,875).

Items pertaining to the Civil War included an autograph book (and thus an actual POW record) of 116 Confederate officers held at Johnson’s Island, Ohio. The rare first-hand record of the POWs, containing two autographs per page, included some of General Morgan’s “Raiders”, an unsuccessful attempt to secretly raid Union camps in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky ($5,000).

The Lincoln County War was an Old West conflict between rival factions that began in 1878 in the Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory (later the state of New Mexico), and continued until 1881. The feud involved William H. Bonney (“Billy the Kid”), Sheriff William J. Brady and other notables. A collection of 17 rare Lincoln County War documents hammered for $6,250.

Lots relating to Abraham Lincoln always stir bidder interest. The auction included these items:

• Three items from the days of mourning following Lincoln’s assassination, including a black mourning ribbon with “P.S. Lincoln” stamped in silver; a funeral card adorned with 16 silver metal spirals; and an official White House pass to the 1865 funeral ($4,500). • A Lincoln & Hamlin 1860 campaign envelope and coated engraved jugate card with portraits of the two men, in fine condition. In the 1860 election, Hamlin balanced the Republican ticket as a New Englander paired with the Northwesterner Lincoln ($3,125). • A Military Trial of Conspirators pass signed by Gen. David Hunter, President of the Military Commission Trial of the Conspirators following Lincoln’s assassination. The pass admitted two men (named) and three of their friends into the courtroom ($2,500).

The famous, Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph taken by Bob Jackson in 1963 the moment JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was shot and killed by Jack Ruby in the basement of the Dallas Police headquarters, signed by homicide detective James Robert Leavelle (1920-2019), who is shown in the photo wearing a white cowboy hat and expressing wide-eyed shock, made $3,750.

A cabinet card with a photo of a senior Chief Sitting Bull, the image crisp with good contrast, changed hands for $3,250. The back of the card reads, “compliments of Mary Moore”, possibly the famous actress of the time. Sitting Bull fought the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of Little Big Horn but was not the leader. He later accompanied Buffalo Bill in his very popular Wild West Show.

2024 PTP Pink Paper: 2SLGBTQIA+ Representation in Canada’s Screen Industries

Study finds progress but significant work yet to be done for meaningful 2SLGBTQIA+ representation

The PTP Pink Paper comes at a time when representation is more important than ever as data shows support for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights and visibility in Canada is on the decline. The PTP Pink Paper’s insights reflect the same sentiment with 93% of industry professionals agreeing that 2SLGBTQIA+ representation on Canadian screens is extremely important to them and relates to how they are viewed and treated in society.

"Historically, queer and trans screen representation has been painful – relying on twisted stereotypes and degrading vilification. Our stories have been censored, revised or overlooked," says Walberg. "There has been an explosion of queer characters recently, but our research reveals important issues and gaps, both in screen portrayals and the experience of industry workers.

The PTP Pink Paper research was conducted from late 2023 through to 2024 and covers English and French markets in Canada. The project was commissioned by Pink Triangle Press and conducted by Maru Matchbox and Signal Hill Insights research companies, and written by academic Alex Custodio. Surveying professionals in film, TV, streaming and videogame industries, the PTP Pink Paper findings show alignment in the need for representation.

While 85% of professionals observe that the on-screen portrayal of 2SLGBTQIA+ characters has improved in the past 5 years, there remains a significant gap in the amount, nature of representation and the narrowness of representation within 2SLGBTQIA+. Specifically the amount of queer and trans characters in Canadian media and how 2SLGBTQIA+ people are portrayed.

There are notable barriers to driving representation on screen including a lack of 2SLGBTQIA+ decision-makers, cautious industry executives, storytelling tropes, and stereotypes to name a few. The vast majority of industry professionals agree that portrayal of 2SLGBTQIA+ characters is frequently superficial (85%), stereotypical (84%), or focused solely on trauma (88%).

To present the findings, Walberg was joined on a panel by Actor/Writer/Producer Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek), Actress Cassandra James (General Hospital), Michelle Mama, co-founder of Gay Agenda, and Writer/Actor/Producer Alexander Nunez (Moonshine) of Border2Border Entertainment moderated by Michael Serapio of CPAC.

The survey’s results show there is still work to be done with 82% of respondents believing 2SLGBTQIA+ representation is uneven. Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse character identities are seen to be more underrepresented than other 2SLGBTQIA+ identities, especially compared to gay men. While gay men are the best-represented group, they still only represent 7% presence in the top shows in English and French Canada.

Pink Triangle Press hopes that the inaugural PTP Pink Paper will help drive effective representation both on screen and in the funding process in Canada and globally. The findings support this with 66% of Canadian media industry professionals not believing that Canadian-funded content sufficiently supports the inclusion of 2SLGBTQIA+ themes, stories, and professionals.

2SLGBTQIA+ identities remain critically underrepresented across the Canadian media landscape. Nuanced, meaningful, and authentic 2SLGBTQIA+ stories are particularly lacking.

There remains an immense opportunity to better represent queer voices on-screen with ​​90% of professionals agreeing that Canadian audiences want to see authentic 2SLGBTQIA+ representation, two-thirds of whom feel strongly about this sentiment.

Overall, those who offered their voices to the PTP Pink Paper want to see more authentic, complex, and inclusive representation, a wider variety of narratives, genres and themes that include 2SLGBTQIA+ characters, behind-the-scenes representation at all levels and increased financial, promotional, and educational support for 2SLGBTQIA+ content and professionals.

Produced by Full Screen Films, this micro-budget movie was created by award-winning indie filmmakers Demeter Lorant (director, writer, editor) and Gábor Sz. Nagy (producer). Filmed in just 10 days by a dedicated three-man crew in the Hungarian countryside, the story unfolds in a creepy house where the protagonist must stay for several days, completing tasks for a stranger who has kidnapped his family. The film combines elements of "The Babadook" and "Jacob’s Ladder," with a hint of Lovecraftian horror. The movie was shot at the end of April and is in post-production, the planned release is the fall of 2024.

Logline: In the house of nightmares, every instruction is a step closer to saving his family... or losing himself.

The movie features Nicolas Hackenberg, a French actor residing in Hungary, in his first leading role. Previously, he has appeared in "Fauda," "FBI International," and various other TV series and films. Working with him was a unique experience, as he carries the film with more than two-thirds of the scenes focusing solely on him. This made for a challenging shoot, with minimal downtime as he was constantly on camera and in character. He delivered an outstanding performance as Josh, the cop whose family has been kidnapped.

Rebecka Johnston (“Midsommar”, “The Strangers - Chapter 1.”) plays the owner of the house where the majority of the movie is set, she is a very talented Swedish actress living in Budapest, Hungary.

Short synopsis: Josh, a seasoned but troubled detective, has spent 20 years confronting life's darkest corners, shaping him into a hardened man. Now, he faces his greatest challenge: his wife and two daughters have been kidnapped by a mysterious figure. To save them, Josh must follow the stranger's commands, move into an empty house, remain unnoticed, and complete a series of tasks.
The house, a gateway to a dark dimension, begins to consume the reality around Josh, driving him toward insanity. As he navigates this perilous journey, he confronts a terror even more frightening—his own dark side.

Kicking off the event, Marcy De Pina, President of the Board of Directors, extended a warm welcome, setting the stage for Executive Director Lauren LeBeaux Craig's unveiling of Newark Arts’ New 5- Year Strategic Plan. LeBeaux Craig underscored the arts' significant economic impact, stressing the imperative for strategic expansion to meet escalating demands.

The strategic plan charts a course through 2029 to deepen Newark Arts' influence by bolstering artist support, positioning Newark as an arts hub, fostering equitable growth, and harnessing the arts for urban revitalization. Sustainability, amplification of Newark Arts' message, and strategic alliances form the bedrock of this ambitious endeavor. LeBeaux Craig delineated the transformative impact of various initiatives, including Newark’s Creative Catalyst Fund — an outgrowth of the Newark Creates cultural plan, - which dispersed $2.35 million to 402 artists and small organizations from 2020 to 2023, and ArtStart grants, which has provided $1 million in micro grants since 2001. These programs, alongside the Newark Arts Festival, ArtSource, fiscal sponsorship, Creative Convenings, and emergency grants, have catalyzed artistic expression, community enrichment, and Newark's emergence as a cultural destination.

Councilman Dupré Kelly, of the legendary hip-hop group Lords of the Underground, led a spirited Q&A session, emphasizing the arts' pivotal role in Newark's identity. SANTA FE, N.M., June 27, 2024 (Newswire.com) - Zahra Marwan’s dreamlike watercolors have always had a close relationship with the written word: the origin of her paintings is often a sparse yet evocative line of text. Born in Kuwait, Marwan is the author of Where Butterflies Fill the Sky (Bloomsbury Publishing NYC, 2022), which chronicles her family’s journey from Kuwait to Albuquerque, NM when she was a child, escaping discrimination in Kuwait where she and much of her family were considered stateless and were subject to open discrimination and discriminatory laws.

In her show at Hecho a Mano, Marwan’s skill for marrying language and art is evident in watercolor paintings centering roses and Arab poetry. Drawn from the seven Mu’allaqat—the ancient Suspended Odes that were hung in the Kaaba in Mecca and were so dear to the Arabs that they were written in gold—Marwan’s paintings evoke a feeling of awe and longing. 

Marwan describes the paintings’ mood as akin to Saadi Shirazi's Gulistān, or Rose Garden, a work composed of short prose in chapters. She was inspired, too, by an image from the medieval romantic epic The Romance of the Rose, in which the character Amant falls asleep and wakes up in the garden from his dream. Her paintings suggest the greater historical Andalusian influences and connection to Arabic poetry written on the Iberian Peninsula.

The show’s title comes from Gertrude Stein’s 1913 poem, “Sacred Emily,” which was inspired by Stein’s search for a new language in collaboration with Picasso. Marwan says she read the poem in Paris in October: “Fragmented and repetitive, it kept reappearing starkly in my life,” she says.  

Marwan has received several book awards and recognitions, including the New York Times/New York Public Library’s Best Illustrated Children’s Books of 2022. “Receiving news that my work was in the New York Times Ten Best Illustrated Books was really an absolute dream,” Marwan says, explaining that during the first few years she was sharing her work, she was told by publishers that it wasn’t a good fit for picture books, and by the fine art world that it wasn’t a good fit for galleries. “To see it be uplifted felt almost miraculous after so many eloquent rejections,” Marwan says. 

She also received the United Nations Human Rights Commission Art Award for creating art that uplifts statelessness in 2022. “We are handed down ancient poems, suspended odes in gold, our lives like a rose garden in chapters,” Marwan says.

About Qiuyu Li Alex Li (Qiuyu Li), Ph.D., born in Beijing, China in 1992, arrived in Japan in 2013. After obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Information Science, he pursued his research in design under the guidance of Prof. Yoshimaru Takahashi, obtaining a Doctorate in Fine Arts in 2024. HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio, July 19, 2024 (Newswire.com) - Buc-ee’s, home of the world’s cleanest bathrooms, freshest food and friendliest beaver, will break ground on its new travel center in Huber Heights, Ohio, on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at 4:00 PM EDT. Buc-ee’s will celebrate the start of construction with a ceremony attended by local leaders. 

Buc-ee’s Huber Heights will be the first Buc-ee’s location in Ohio. 

Located at 8000 State Highway 235, Buc-ee’s Huber Heights will occupy 74,000 square feet and offer 100 fueling positions and 24 EV charging stations. Buc-ee’s favorites, including Texas barbeque, homemade fudge, kolaches, Beaver Nuggets, jerky and fresh pastries, will all be available. Visitors will find thousands of snack, meal and drink options, as well as the same award-winning restrooms, cheap gas, quality products and excellent service that have won the hearts, trust and business of millions for over 40 years.

Attendees of the Buc-ee’s Huber Heights groundbreaking ceremony will include state and local leaders, including Huber Heights Mayor Jeff Gore.

Founded in Texas in 1982, Buc-ee’s operates 50 stores in total. Since beginning its multi-state expansion in 2019, Buc-ee’s has opened travel centers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, and Colorado. Buc-ee’s broke ground on the first Virginia and Mississippi locations earlier this year.

Throughout the project, Buc-ee’s corporate development team will continue to work closely with local partners. Buc-ee’s Huber Heights will bring at least 200 full-time jobs to the area, with starting pay beginning well above minimum wage, full benefits, a 6% matching 401k, and three weeks of paid vacation.
